Precious Metals IRA: Eligibility, Custody and Account Rules

By Gold IRA Path Editorial Team

Published Updated

A precious-metals IRA can hold qualifying gold, silver, platinum or palladium under an IRA’s investment and trustee-possession rules. Eligibility is item-specific: metal category, fineness, statutory coin exceptions and custody must be checked together. This overview concentrates on those asset and storage questions, not a price forecast or provider ranking.

For the wider account decision, use the practical Gold IRA hub. A precious-metals holding is an asset choice inside traditional or Roth account treatment; it is not a third tax wrapper or an extra annual contribution allowance.[12], [11]

1. Identify the account and responsible parties

The dealer quotes the actual product. The custodian administers the IRA and its reporting. The depository holds inventory under the selected custody/storage arrangement. A company helping to coordinate these functions is not automatically the trustee or vault owner. Read the named agreements rather than infer roles from a marketing logo.

The SEC explains that a self-directed IRA custodian generally does not evaluate an investment’s quality or legitimacy. Asset acceptance is not a recommendation, proof of fair pricing or an assurance against fraud.[20]

2. Metals eligibility: fineness and exceptions

Section 408(m) generally treats IRA collectibles as distributions of the amount invested, while subsection (3) provides exceptions for certain coins and qualifying bullion. Bullion fineness is tied to the applicable contract-market minimum. A separate coin exception is not the same as a blanket rule allowing every coin of a particular purity.[22], [11]

Bullion metalContract-market minimum finenessSource and eligibility caution
Gold0.995 (99.5%)CME gold standard; specified statutory coins have distinct treatment.[23], [22]
Silver0.999 (99.9%)CME silver standard; verify the exact item accepted by the custodian.[24]
Platinum0.9995 (99.95%)CME platinum standard; fineness alone is not all IRA conditions.[25]
Palladium0.9995 (99.95%)CME palladium standard; verify product and custody.[26]

Do not use 0.9995 as the general gold bullion minimum. Do not assume a product described as rare, collectible, proof or premium is eligible merely because it contains precious metal. Have the receiving custodian verify the exact coin/bar and statutory basis before the order.

The detailed metals-eligibility guide handles the narrow fineness and coin-exception question. If an item is ineligible, the amount-invested deemed-distribution rule is distinct from whole-account prohibited-transaction consequences; avoid collapsing them into one automatic penalty.[11]

3. Trustee possession is not a retail shipping choice

For qualifying highly refined bullion, the IRS requires physical possession of a bank or approved nonbank trustee. Its FAQ explicitly applies the requirement to bullion acquired indirectly by an IRA-owned LLC. Statutory coin eligibility exceptions do not establish a general personal home-storage authorization.[13]

A retail bullion order delivered to your home is a different arrangement from a purchase held under IRA trustee custody. An authorized in-kind distribution later is also a separate event with valuation and distribution rules. Read the home-storage explanation before accepting a supposed shortcut.

Document issueQuestion to resolveWhat not to infer
Allocated inventoryHow are holdings attributed to the account? Not automatically segregated by customer
Segregated inventoryAre specific customer items separated and returned? Not a universal guarantee of price, provenance or insolvency priority
Non-segregated/commingledWhat equivalent product is delivered and how is ownership recorded? Not automatically unallocated or ownerless
InsuranceWhat risks, exclusions and limits apply? Not protection against market loss or FDIC deposit insurance

Delaware’s FAQ says its bullion is allocated and distinguishes grouping by product from separation by customer. That description belongs to that depository’s terms, not a universal legal definition of every provider’s arrangement.[19]

Compare segregation and commingling documents and storage options and contract differences before choosing by label or account size.

5. Fees and Costs

A precious-metals IRA can involve opening, administration, storage, activity, product-price and exit costs. Three account-charge categories to identify are:

  • Setup fee: The opening charge on the selected custodian’s current schedule. Check whether an initial wire is separate and apply only documented fee coverage.
  • Annual administrative fee: The custodian’s recurring account charge. Identify whether it is flat, tiered or percentage-based, when it is billed and what can change.
  • Storage fee: The charge under the selected depository/storage agreement. Confirm the arrangement, insurance coverage and billing party instead of assuming one rate applies to every option.

For billing roles and hypothetical entry/holding/exit math, read Gold IRA fees explained. Our dated fee comparison and quote worksheet separates disclosed figures from account-specific unknowns.

4. Separate tax rules from the metal selection

Traditional and Roth IRA rules apply independently of choosing gold, silver, platinum or palladium. Traditional contributions may be deductible under applicable conditions; distributions generally include taxable income except basis and other exclusions. Qualified Roth distributions satisfy their five-tax-year and qualifying-event rules. Do not call all traditional distributions taxable in full or all Roth withdrawals tax-free.[12], [11]

For 2026, regular traditional/Roth IRA contributions share a $7,500 limit plus $1,100 at age 50 or older, subject to compensation and other requirements. The metal choice does not create another contribution cap. A provider purchase minimum is a separate access condition; eligible transfers and rollovers are not regular contributions.[10], [12]

5. Fund and confirm the purchase in order

  • Confirm the tax designation and whether the old institution allows the intended movement before opening costs are incurred.
  • Use the receiving custodian’s accepted funding instructions, not an unverified dealer email.
  • Have the precise product and custody arrangement approved before authorizing the trade.
  • Obtain cash-posting and trade-settlement records, then reconcile the received inventory.
  • Retain the documents and plan for account charges and eventual cash/in-kind distributions.

An IRA trustee transfer, employer direct rollover and participant-paid indirect rollover have different rules. The general 60-day rule concerns applicable rollover funding, not a promise that metal must be delivered by that date. Direct pre-tax-to-Roth movement can still generate conversion income. Use the funding movement guide for the source-account distinction.[14]

No universal application, cash-movement or vault-delivery timeline is established here. The opening-stage status guide explains the limited vault-receipt estimate separately from total opening.

6. What the structure can and cannot provide

Physical metal supplies a different asset exposure, but it pays no contractual interest or dividend and can lose value. A tax wrapper cannot guarantee purchasing-power protection, make returns independent of all other assets or insure against market drawdowns. Evaluate liquidity and account costs alongside the desired holding, not as an afterthought.[20]

The balanced account tradeoff review separates structural features from return expectations. If a sales pitch substitutes urgent protection claims for product documentation, use the scam red-flag checklist. CFTC/FINRA specifically cautions about inflated prices and misleading retirement-account pitches.[21]

7. Compare the complete selected arrangement

After eligibility and custody are established, compare the exact product, same-day reference price and bid, opening charges, recurring charges and chosen exit. Account costs do not establish a future liquidation price. A provider’s public minimum does not show suitability or increase IRA contribution room.

For one concrete threshold and fee-disclosure contrast, Augusta versus Noble compares Augusta’s documented arrangement with Noble’s conflicting production schedules. For statement/storage option differences, Augusta versus Lear separates the matching lower recurring number from unequal thresholds and storage conditions. Neither page is a broad provider ranking.

Use the comparison directory to reach the other exact pairs. Keep the named custodian and vault selections beside the quote; do not presume every buyer receives a provider’s sample combination.

8. Common eligibility and operating questions

Do precious-metals IRAs guarantee inflation protection? No. Holding physical metal does not establish a positive return or purchasing-power outcome. Account costs and price risk remain.

Can physical delivery avoid distribution tax? No. An authorized in-kind withdrawal is a distribution, with taxable amount and qualified Roth treatment governed by the applicable rules. A sale retained inside the IRA is a different event.[11]

When do RMDs start? The applicable birth cohort and beneficiary rules matter. Original Roth IRA owners have no lifetime RMDs. Ask the custodian how an RMD amount, inventory valuation and cash/in-kind delivery are handled; do not apply one age to all readers.[18]

Does a pure-enough bar automatically qualify? No. Item eligibility, acceptance and trustee possession must be considered together. Obtain the receiving custodian’s written confirmation before purchasing.[22], [13]
